Legal
Privacy policy.
What we collect, why, and what you can do about it. Written to describe what this website actually does, not to cover us.
Who we are
The short version
We collect almost nothing. If you fill in our contact form, we get what you typed. If you say yes to analytics, we learn which pages people read. We don’t sell any of it, and we don’t send you marketing you didn’t ask for.
This policy applies to altdata.com.au and is issued by ALTDATA Pty Ltd (ABN 46 657 327 592), of the Innovation & Collaboration Centre, 9 Light Square, Adelaide, South Australia. We handle personal information under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.
What we collect
Information you give us
Our contact form asks for five things, and stores exactly those five:
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your organisation
- The type of enquiry you picked from the dropdown
- Your message
Only the name, email and message are required. Everything else is optional, and there are no hidden fields collecting anything else about you.
We use this solely to answer you and to keep a record of the conversation. We don’t add you to a mailing list off the back of an enquiry, and we don’t sell, rent or trade personal information to anyone, ever.
Information collected automatically
Analytics, only if you agree. We use Google Analytics to understand which pages are useful. It is switched off by default. Nothing loads, no cookie is set and no data is sent unless you press Accept on the cookie bar. Declining, or simply ignoring it, means the Google script is never even requested. If you accept, your IP address is anonymised before it reaches us.
Spam protection. Our contact form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from bots. It loads only on the contact page, nowhere else on the site, and it is strictly necessary for the form to work. Without it the inbox fills with junk within days. It checks browser signals rather than tracking you across sites, and it may set a cookie strictly for that check. It is not advertising, and there is no consent bar for it, because the form cannot function without it.
Server logs. Our web host keeps standard access logs, which include IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting.
Cookies
Changing your mind
Your choice is stored in your browser, not on our servers, so it’s yours to reverse. Clear this site’s data in your browser settings and the cookie bar will ask again next time you visit.
We don’t use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, social media widgets or third-party embeds anywhere on this site. There is no advertising network involved in altdata.com.au at all. The only third-party code that loads without asking first is the spam check on the contact page, described above, and it is there so the form works at all.
Where it goes
Who sees your information
An enquiry is emailed to our team inbox and stored in a file on our server that isn’t reachable from the web. Our staff read it. Nobody else does.
The exceptions are the service providers who make the site run: our web host, Google (analytics, if you accepted) and Cloudflare (spam protection). They process data on our behalf under their own terms; they aren’t given your enquiry to use for their own purposes.
We may also disclose information where the law requires it.
Overseas disclosure
Your enquiry is read and answered by our team in Australia. It isn’t routed to staff or offices overseas. The website itself runs on a server in Germany, so the enquiry you submit (and its private backup file) is received and stored there by our hosting provider on our behalf.
Two more qualifications, because they’re true and most policies skip them. Google and Cloudflare are overseas providers, and using them means the data they handle (analytics events if you consented, and the spam check when you submit the form) is processed outside Australia, including in the United States. Your enquiry itself is not sent to either.
Your control
Keeping and deleting it
We keep enquiries for as long as we need them for the conversation and any work that follows, and for a reasonable period afterwards for our business records. When information is no longer needed, we delete it. You can ask us to delete yours sooner.
Access, correction and complaints
You can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct anything wrong, or delete it. Email info@altdata.com.au and we’ll respond within a reasonable period. We won’t charge you for asking, and we don’t require a form.
If you think we’ve mishandled your personal information, tell us first. Email the same address and we’ll investigate. If you’re not satisfied with how we’ve dealt with it, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information: the site is served over HTTPS, enquiry records are stored outside the public web root, and access is limited to staff who need it. No system is perfectly secure, and we won’t pretend otherwise. We’d rather hold less of your data than promise to defend more of it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle personal information, we’ll update this page and change the date at the top. Material changes will be obvious, not buried.
